Sasha Chavez, MS, is a third-year doctoral student in Kinesiology at the University of Maryland, College Park, concentrating in Physical Cultural Studies under the advisement of Jennifer D. Roberts, DrPH, MPH. With an academic background in Exercise Physiology and Sports Medicine, Sasha’s work explores the sociocultural factors that influence health and wellness, with a particular emphasis on active play in pediatric populations.

Through qualitative research methodologies, Sasha examines the contextual and environmental barriers that limit activity engagement among children. This work builds upon a strong scientific foundation while incorporating a critical, community-centered lens that considers access, equity, and lived experience.

Sasha brings hands-on experience as a former volunteer assistant soccer coach, Community Engagement Fellow at a recreation center, and practicing Exercise Physiologist. These roles have reinforced the importance of access in promoting growth, empowerment, and health literacy. Currently, Sasha collaborates on research initiatives that intersect nature, social injustice, and the built environment.

As a member of the Medical Revenue Cycle Specialists (MRCS) team, Sasha applies qualitative research and community-centered expertise to support community health and equity–focused initiatives. Her work helps ensure that public health priorities remain central as MRCS implements medical billing, EMR optimization, and workflow improvement efforts. Through this lens, Sasha contributes to projects that strengthen local communities while supporting sustainable healthcare operations.
