September in Focus: Healthcare Awareness, Patient Safety, Recovery & Healthy Aging

September is an important month for healthcare awareness, education, and action. At Medical Revenue Cycle Specialists (MRCS), we recognize the patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and organizations working every day to improve access, safety, recovery, and quality of life.
National Recovery Month celebrates people in recovery and the providers, families, peers, and communities who support them. Established in 1989, the observance also promotes evidence-based treatment and recovery practices and helps reduce stigma around mental health and substance use disorders. This year’s theme, “Recovery is REAL — Restoring Every Aspect of Life,” emphasizes that recovery is possible and can take many different paths. Resources, educational materials, and the National Recovery Month toolkit are available through SAMHSA.
Sepsis Awareness Month focuses on helping more people recognize and respond quickly to sepsis, the body’s life-threatening response to infection. In 2026, Sepsis Alliance is marking 15 years of Sepsis Awareness Month with education, advocacy, community events, social resources, and its Sepsis Superhero Challenge. Healthcare organizations can get involved by sharing educational materials, reviewing infection-prevention practices, educating staff and patients on warning signs, and using Sepsis Alliance’s free awareness toolkits.
Healthy Aging Month encourages people to take an active role in their physical, mental, social, and overall well-being at every stage of life. The 2026 theme, “Curiosity Has No Age Limit,” encourages continued learning, connection, movement, exploration, and engagement as we age. Individuals and organizations can participate by promoting wellness programs, community activities, educational opportunities, preventive care, and conversations about healthy aging.
On September 17, World Patient Safety Day brings global attention to reducing preventable harm in healthcare. The World Health Organization’s 2026 theme is “Safe care for noncommunicable diseases,” with the message “Safe care for life!” The campaign highlights safer diagnosis, medication management, coordinated long-term care, strong health systems, and greater involvement of patients in decisions about their care. Healthcare organizations can participate by reviewing safety processes, sharing WHO resources, engaging patients and staff, and supporting patient-safety improvement initiatives.
Telehealth Awareness Week recognizes the expanding role of virtual care in improving access to healthcare, especially for patients facing geographic, mobility, transportation, or provider-access barriers. The American Telemedicine Association is hosting its 6th annual Telehealth Awareness Week in September 2026, bringing attention to connected care, innovation, policy, and ways healthcare organizations can use technology to reach patients more effectively. Healthcare leaders can get involved by exploring ATA educational resources, reviewing their own virtual-care programs, and continuing conversations around accessibility, quality, privacy, and the patient experience.
At MRCS, these observances are also reminders that strong healthcare organizations depend on more than clinical care alone. Clear communication, patient access, safe processes, effective technology, and efficient revenue cycle operations all contribute to a stronger patient experience and healthier communities.
We encourage healthcare professionals and organizations to explore resources from SAMHSA, Sepsis Alliance, Healthy Aging®, the World Health Organization, and the American Telemedicine Association and find a way to educate, advocate, or take action this September.
