1. COVID
Treatment tends to center around wealthier areas. A big reason for this is the more affluent areas being less crowded, thus providing better access to medications. The same holds true for covid-19. People in wealthier neighborhoods accessed medicines at higher rates in the past 5 months than in the high vulnerability areas. On another note, a new review from Johnson and Johnson found that women are 22% more likely to develop long-term symptoms from the infection. The literature review looked at 4,346 studies and found that only 35 broke down the symptoms and disease progression by sex.
2. Telehealth
While telehealth visits are dropping among all specialties, mental health visits are increasing. In May of 2022, 87% of mental health appointments were virtual. This is up from 74% of mental health visits in May 2020. Providers and patients are starting to view telehealth care as a supplement to in-person care rather than a substitute.
3. Tobacco Industry
The Biden Administration is pushing for the tobacco industry to reduce the amount of nicotine in cigarettes sold in the US to non-addictive levels. The FDA can't ban cigarettes outright, but it can create non-attractive standards, so fewer people consume them.
4. Mark Cuban's Pharmacy
A recent report suggests that Medicare could have saved nearly 4 billion dollars from drug prices if it paid what Mark Cuban's pharmacy charges. Medicare would have saved $3.6 billion in 2020 on 77 different drugs should Medicare have bought from the Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company.
